Assistant Professor
What's your job title here at UPEI, 而且 what is your typical workday like?
On the Montgomery side, my main project right now is editing the Journal of L.M. 蒙哥马利学院, 在罗伯逊图书馆, 而且 students in the Faculty of Arts—as well as scholars across PEI, 加拿大, 和世界. LMMI, I get to work with students on a lot of different projects—they have created multimedia exhibits for the Journal, 文学之旅, 蒙哥马利PEI的地图, 庆祝蒙哥马利与伊利诺伊大学pei的联系的时间轴, 而且 lots of material for the LMMI website 而且 the Journal. I’m also collecting people’s stories of discovering 而且 engaging with the world of L.M. Montgomery, whether that’s her fiction or adaptations of her work.
My 教学 happens in ACLC 而且 my primary 教学 is in three Putting Arts to Works courses, where students explore their Liberal Arts education—its purposes, 使用, 和应用程序. 例如, my Putting Arts to Work II students learn research skills 而且 create a multimedia research project. 上次我教这门课的时候, 项目很有趣，范围很广, including one on the history of music 而且 another on dyslexia in education.
I’ve also taught an English course 而且 the students created a podcast—I can’t wait to hear it! 学生们已经提出了题目, 口号, 图标和标志, 而且 intro 而且 outro sequences (including music composed just for this assignment).
So, I spend a lot of my time thinking about what I hope are interesting readings
Ever since I can remember I was an Anne of Green Gables reader 而且 so to get to work on L.M.
I think a lot of students aren’t sure what they can do with an Arts degree or are uncertain of how to articulate the valuable skills 而且 knowledge they’re gaining in their degrees. ACLC teaches twenty-first century skills through courses like Digital Literary 而且 Public Speaking not necessarily foregrounded or explicitly taught in traditional Arts programs like English or sociology. The ACLC program also complements other Arts disciplines by having students reflect on 而且 articulate their learning in their other courses, 期待未来的面试, 例如. 在面对, we also support students to take what they’re learning in these other courses—say how to analyze Anne of Green Gables in an English course—而且 share that with a wider audience by, 例如, designing 而且 creating a public digital project like a podcast.
I started working at UPEI just as we started 教学 ACLC 而且 it’s been exciting to be part of building a program that I think is both reassuring 而且 inspiring students.
What kinds of opportunities have you experienced because you're 教学 而且 working at UPEI, 或者是因为岛上的位置?
Amazing colleagues—students here are fortunate to be taught by knowledgeable, The 罗伯逊图书馆 is a wonderful resource; not only are the librarians extremely supportive 而且 experts in a range of areas, but the library has been at the cutting edge of new developments in digital initiatives.
It’s also possible to build connections in the wider community easily. 在面对, we’re also fortunate to have two adjunct professors (both UPEI Arts grads!) who share their experience as practitioners with our students.
例如, in ACLC we offer students one-on-one mentoring which complements the excellent advising that UPEI’s Experiential Education unit offers students. Professors at UPEI challenge 而且 inspire students intellectually, whether they’re studying Irish or Atlantic Canadian literature, 食物或音乐历史, 沟通或项目管理, 同时让学生产生创造性, 像杂志文章这样的技能培养项目, 视频, 还有数字地图, 举几个例子.
What would you tell a high school student considering a UPEI program?
University is a rare opportunity to be able to explore many historical 而且 contemporary issues; no matter what you go on to do in your life that extensive knowledge 而且 openness to learning will be a benefit.
University is a wonderful time to meet people 而且 to learn from others. I was always very nervous to talk to professors in their office hours but we want to hear from you 而且 there’s nothing like a one-on-one conversation to make ideas 而且 assignments clearer (而且 hopefully more interesting!).
